Tips for Getting Started with Vi

Vim, otherwise known as Vi, is an editor on Unix based Operating Systems. It is important to be able to understand and use Vi because it is the only editor that you can be assured will be available to you on every Unix system. You should become proficient and confident in your use of Vi in order to be ready for any Unix environment that you may encounter. Here is a list of some useful Vi commands:

Accessing a file:
  • vi [filename]
  • i - insert mode
  • esc - exit insert mode
  • dd - delete a line
  • x - delete a character
  • r - replace a character
  • u - undo
  • :q - quit
  • :w - write/save
  • :wq - save and quit
